Just four days ago, Roksanda Ilincic spoke at Vogue’s Fashion Forces conference wearing a dress from her Spring 2020 collection: crisp, softly pleated cotton in a fresh hibiscus shade with flowing sleeves. With its loose silhouette and bold colors, it easily makes a statement, which pretty succinctly sums up the Myfrogclothing-Umusic Keys Tour Post Malone T-Shirt On the whole aesthetic of her 14-year-old label. Colorful dresses are her forte—the kind that you can wear with loafers (like she did at the convention) or heels for a night out. That makes her latest collaboration even more surprising: a 16-piece collection for Lululemon. What do a London tailor and a leggings pioneer in Canada have in common? Obviously a lot. Ilincic told Vogue: “The ethos behind both brands is to empower women, to make them comfortable with who they are, with their bodies and with the clothes they wear. Launched on October 22, the capsule brings her attention to color and volume to Lululemon’s core components and technical fabrics. For example, the company’s Define zipper jacket has been remade with full sleeves, Roksanda style, and is color-coordinated with raspberry and orchid. One hooded cape is the same shade as ocher, while another has a zipper that combines navy, emerald, and mint. “What’s interesting is that I tend to wear black to the gym,” explains Ilincic. “Every other occasion, whether it’s to work, to an event or taking my daughter to school, I wear colored clothes. But when I exercise, I wear black. My swimsuit is black. So it was refreshing to extend my brand theory and philosophy to sportswear and to push my own boundaries.” Ilincic’s customers probably have similarly simple workout gear, perhaps because it’s so rare to find artistic colors like hers on the sportswear market; usually, all of them are neon lights and cute patterns. In contrast, her Lululemon pieces feel elegant and upscale with shades like sienna, bold sapphire, lilac and mustard; In fact, you can even picture people who don’t like athletes wearing them outside the gym. In addition to the more familiar leggings and sports bras of the sleeping pod, there are items specifically for those in the middle, on the go, such as midi skirts, wide-leg pants and drawstring skirts, all in technical satin. “It’s really the pieces to transition from one phase to another in your day, when you’re on your way to the gym or you’re just going to work,” says Ilincic. (For example, wear the dress over leggings on your way to yoga, then wear it again for the rest of the workday.) “We’re seeing how the boundaries of fashion blur and people are wearing sportswear everywhere. It’s a great direction that fashion is heading. I wore one of the long-sleeve tops with my casual clothes and I found it to be refreshing. It was fun to incorporate those unexpected colors and fabrics.” Audrey Reilly, Lululemon’s head of design, calls it “sweating the streets”—and both women agree that’s where the luxury market is headed. “At Lululemon, we are obsessed with the woman who is always on the go, is an urban nomad, and combines function with high fashion,” says Reilly. “Roksanda really understands proportions, shapes and makeup for the female body, and we think about function and performance. So we challenged each other and tried to show both in each piece.” Their heroic style, the Inner Expanse Jacket, is a prime example: In navy and black or purple, it can be layered into a giant puffer or subdivided into a vest, jacket, or raincoat, among other combinations. “For me, it is important to feel the pulse of time and the pulse of a woman—what she wants, how she is living,” adds Ilincic. “The pace of our lives has necessitated a certain change in the way we dress. Sneakers appeared a few years ago and t-shirts are accepted everywhere, along with leggings and sports jackets. As a designer, you have to be attuned to that, and with this collaboration I can push the concept even further.” Priced from $78 to $998, the collection will be available from October 22 on lululemon.com and at select Lululemon and Roksanda stores.
